The Polish 2nd Corps (2 Korpusu, Corpo Polacco) fought with allied forces in several theatres under General Anders. The 2nd Corps may be most remembered for its pivotal contribution to allied victories in Italy at Monte Cassino, Ancona and Bologna. After the war the 2nd Corps stayed in Italy to administer the Barletta-Trani DP camp and generally provide for displaced Poles. This included producing stamps for use on internal Italian post and external mail, by agreement with the Italian government. The first basic series is valued in Polish currency, depicting the sites of famous victories and General Anders. The series offered in this lot was produced in Italian currency with new designs, in two stages with the five lower denominations printed first and then Lira denominations of similar design printed later. This lot offers the entire set in Italian currency.
The Polish II Corps (Polish: Drugi Korpus Wojska Polskiego), 1943–1947, was a major tactical and operational unit of the Polish Armed Forces in the West during World War II. It was commanded by Lieutenant General Wladyslaw Anders and fought with distinction in the Italian Campaign, in particular at the Battle of Monte Cassino. By the end of 1945, the corps had grown to well over 100,000 soldiers.
